1936 DEPRESSION MISSISSIPPI FORD CARS STREET PHOTO
1936 DEPRESSION MISSISSIPPI FORD CARS STREET PHOTO
This photograph shows a Vicksburg street. Mississippi. Walker Evens, March, 1936.

Walker Evans, a colleague of the famous photographer, Dorothy Lange. Evans' work focused a sharp eye on poverty, race relations and rural life in America. This photograph was taken during his time in the Depression era federal agency, the Farm Services Administration (FSA).

The e FSA has been called Franklin Roosevelt's personal propaganda machine by some scholars of documentary photography. The FSA took its share of pictures of wheat fields and tractors but it also documented the suffering that Roosevelt aimed to alleviate with his many social programs.
